Just in time for Halloween! Not everyone is fond of darkness. Whether it’s the dark in general or those dark thoughts that you get out of nowhere. I was the same too but I learned to embrace it as early as my teens and I’ve never been the same since then. Negatively? Nope. But instead, positively in so many ways. My darkness made me create some of the covers I never thought of ever creating. Darkness can also bring you the brightest and most beautiful results. It all depends on how you’ll use and handle it. I’ll always and forever will be proud of these babies. A little bit of story time.
I remembered there was one time when a friend of mine saw some fan edits that I made about this one series I was so fond of. It’s mafia/bdsm themed series. I wasn’t fond of it just because of the genre but because of how beautiful the character development was for every character, especially for the second couple. After seeing my edits, she told me that I really killed it. That I got everything right. The editing, the lighting, the colors, the fonts, the texture. Everything fits to a T. In the past, it never made sense to me but I guess, all these years, it’s always been inside of me. That darkness. I just didn’t know it existed. It just came into light when I went through the darkest times of my life. It was hell! But man, since then, I appreciated how beautiful darkness can be too. You just really have to learn how to handle it. It made more sense after realizing that my favorite colors had always been black, red, and white(only on special occasions lol) Grateful to these ladies for writing such beautiful and powerful stories that represent these covers and for letting them be born into this world! Some of these are premade covers and they're still available for purchase here. And just like that...it's been 10 years. It's been a journey filled with ups and downs. Met a lot of people around the world. Some stayed and some left.
If someone would asks me if I go back in time, will I make the same decision of being a designer? Yes! Definitely yes! Not because it's easy but because it's what I really love doing. It's what I enjoy the most. However, being a designer isn't always rainbows and sunshines. After doing this for 10 years, I've seen the best side of people as well as the worst side. I've already lost count how many times I(or my art) was disrespected. Numerous clients doing everything they can to avoid paying. People ghosting me as if my time isn't as important as theirs. I'll never understand why there's this thinking that designers are "just" designers. We don't have a magic button that with a single click, it's done. We spend so many years honing our skills. It's not an overnight thing. It takes a lot of time and dedication. It's the sad reality for most(if not all) designers. If my heart wasn't in this, I would've given up years ago. It's even worse nowadays with AI with people way of thinking like, "Why do they need to pay for a design when they can do it with AI?" But despite it all, I'm still here and it's thanks to those who continue to work with me and appreciate my work. You guys showed me that the world isn't so bad. That there are still good and professional people out there who respects you and what you do. You just have to find your people. Thank you for letting me continue doing what I love the most and for still trusting me with your stories after all these years. And to those of you who supports true and human designers, photographers, authors, models, and all types of creative people, thank you. Thank you for letting us continue making art with a heart and soul. And to all the human creatives out there, I hope you'll never stop creating. Someone out there appreciates your work. No one knows how long I'll be here but one thing I can say is that I'll still be here for quite some time. I still have a long road ahead of me. Well, unless I win the lottery and finally be able to travel around the world. Although even then, I would still be working here and there because creating is what makes me feel alive. It's something that fills my soul. And I hope, the day will never come that I'll lose that. Thank you for the 10 years! Here's to more! As most of you know, I've been on a break since April and while I was trying to have the best time of my life, there's this part of me that just can't stop my creativity from working. There are moments when I'm in the middle of doing something and suddenly, a cover idea hits me. Whenever that happens, I just have to get to it because once it's gone, it's never coming back. At least, not exactly the same as it did before. I always had a thing for discreet covers even before it became a trend in the book industry. There's something about it that makes it special. Maybe it's the symbolism and meaning behind every element or object involved in the cover design. Or maybe it's simply something that speaks to me on a deeper level. This year, in celebration of my birthday, I decided to release a new set of discreet covers and there's something special about this batch that I haven't done in the past 10 years. Whether people will like it or not, that's no longer up to me. All I can tell you is that I love what I do and whenever I see the chance to try something new to broaden my creativity, I always make sure to grab it. This is where my creativity took me this time. You're probably wondering, what was the 'something special' I was talking about in this batch of premade covers. It's the cover below - the one titled "Butterfly Effect". This is the first time I'm using my very own custom photo for a book cover that I designed. So yes, the photo used in this is mine as well and you won't be seeing it in any other covers out there. And yes, that's from my personal accessories collection. This one is extra special to me so when the time comes that I'd be able to see this representing a story, that would be a dream come true for me! Some people asked me why is it that discreet covers seem to cost more than your typical model cover? I'm not speaking for other designers. I'm only speaking for myself and based on my own experience. For me, discreet covers takes so, so, so much more compared to a model cover. With discreet covers, you're literally starting with a blank canvas whereas working with a model, you already have your subject. All you have to do is work the design around the model.
Whenever you see a discreet cover and knows how much it costs to get it made, there are a lot of factors that you have to consider. First, it all starts with conceptualization. Where and how to start depends on how much information you're given about the story. There are moments that you're given a lot and there are moments when you're given a single idea. It's the designer's creativity that needs to figure out how to go from there. Once that's done, it's time for the hard part - finding the right images. You'll be lucky if you're able to find the photos that you need within an hour or a few. After hours and hours that felt like endless searching, you finally have the photos that you need. Now, the next step is turning your design concept into reality. It could work exactly the way you envisioned or not. If it doesn't, you'll need to fix it and figure out what's not working and how you can make it work. Sadly, there are times when it doesn't work so you'll end up changing the whole design. And while you're doing that, you'll have to make sure your layout works perfectly with the fonts and text details that you're using. There's the colors too. Besides all that, don't forget to factor in the money spent on the photos and fonts. And most importantly, the time it took for the designer to come up with the final design. There are moments that's not even everything there is to a discreet cover. There are moments when designers literally make the covers from scratch. What do I mean by that? They design the cover using multiple different brushes and techniques. They go wherever their creativity takes them and that's something you can't copy or duplicate in another design. Factor all those in then maybe...just maybe...you'll be able to understand why discreet covers seem to be a bit more expensive than your regular cover. Like what I promised you at the start of December, I'm releasing a new set of discreet premade covers and it's finally here! Today is the day! I have to admit that I had so much fun working on these covers and some of these are some of my best works of all-time! (At least, that's what I think lol) If you've been following me since I started in this industry, you'll also know that some of these aren't my usual style. That's the thing I love about premade covers. I have all the freedom to design it however I want. I hope that you guys will enjoy them too!
