As most of you know, I've been on a break since April and while I was trying to have the best time of my life, there's this part of me that just can't stop my creativity from working. There are moments when I'm in the middle of doing something and suddenly, a cover idea hits me. Whenever that happens, I just have to get to it because once it's gone, it's never coming back. At least, not exactly the same as it did before. I always had a thing for discreet covers even before it became a trend in the book industry. There's something about it that makes it special. Maybe it's the symbolism and meaning behind every element or object involved in the cover design. Or maybe it's simply something that speaks to me on a deeper level. This year, in celebration of my birthday, I decided to release a new set of discreet covers and there's something special about this batch that I haven't done in the past 10 years. Whether people will like it or not, that's no longer up to me. All I can tell you is that I love what I do and whenever I see the chance to try something new to broaden my creativity, I always make sure to grab it. This is where my creativity took me this time. You're probably wondering, what was the 'something special' I was talking about in this batch of premade covers. It's the cover below - the one titled "Butterfly Effect". This is the first time I'm using my very own custom photo for a book cover that I designed. So yes, the photo used in this is mine as well and you won't be seeing it in any other covers out there. And yes, that's from my personal accessories collection. This one is extra special to me so when the time comes that I'd be able to see this representing a story, that would be a dream come true for me! Some people asked me why is it that discreet covers seem to cost more than your typical model cover? I'm not speaking for other designers. I'm only speaking for myself and based on my own experience. For me, discreet covers takes so, so, so much more compared to a model cover. With discreet covers, you're literally starting with a blank canvas whereas working with a model, you already have your subject. All you have to do is work the design around the model.
Whenever you see a discreet cover and knows how much it costs to get it made, there are a lot of factors that you have to consider. First, it all starts with conceptualization. Where and how to start depends on how much information you're given about the story. There are moments that you're given a lot and there are moments when you're given a single idea. It's the designer's creativity that needs to figure out how to go from there. Once that's done, it's time for the hard part - finding the right images. You'll be lucky if you're able to find the photos that you need within an hour or a few. After hours and hours that felt like endless searching, you finally have the photos that you need. Now, the next step is turning your design concept into reality. It could work exactly the way you envisioned or not. If it doesn't, you'll need to fix it and figure out what's not working and how you can make it work. Sadly, there are times when it doesn't work so you'll end up changing the whole design. And while you're doing that, you'll have to make sure your layout works perfectly with the fonts and text details that you're using. There's the colors too. Besides all that, don't forget to factor in the money spent on the photos and fonts. And most importantly, the time it took for the designer to come up with the final design. There are moments that's not even everything there is to a discreet cover. There are moments when designers literally make the covers from scratch. What do I mean by that? They design the cover using multiple different brushes and techniques. They go wherever their creativity takes them and that's something you can't copy or duplicate in another design. Factor all those in then maybe...just maybe...you'll be able to understand why discreet covers seem to be a bit more expensive than your regular cover.
