First of all, I would really like to give a shout out and a HUGE thank you to Marian Tee! Truth is, this should only be her interview but she invited me to come with her that's why this became possible. Second, I would like to thank Ms. Alma for such an amazing article! It really turned out waaaaaaaaay better than me and Marian thought! Tell you, Ms. Alma is a very talented writer that she's also one of the Philippines' topnotch writers and a Palanca Award recipient(like what Marian said in her blog). I'm really thankful to her for the interview and we really had an amazing time! Last but not the least, thanks to Philippines Graphic too!
Truth is, CT Cover Creations is having their 1st anniversary this month and I still can't believe where I am now and what I have now. Everything still feels so surreal for me. Like what I always said, never in my entire life had I imagined myself working on books. I was a graduate with a degree in Bachelor of Arts in Animation. I know it's a bit close to my field but I never thought of working with books since I wasn't really the reader type in the past and I was never that good to consider myself working on graphic novels.
Now, I'm where I am. I'm really thankful to God for making all of these possible. To my family that even though they don't know what I'm doing they still support me. To Marian, for convincing me to try being a cover artist. To all my loyal, amazing and super nice clients, who stick with me and always enjoy our time together. To my bestfriends who had always been so supportive to everything I do since day 1. And last but not the least, to my idol and his fam for teaching me what WORK HARD PLAY HARD is all about! If it weren't for all these people, I'm sure I wouldn't be where I am now.
After a year, who would have thought I would even get the chance to be part of an interview? No one not even I but it came. It's here. I can see it with my own eyes and can feel it with my own hands. It wasn't a big part but it's way more than enough for me.
Also, I'm really thankful to Ms. Alma that she included Victoria Ashley. I'm really really proud of her! She soooooo deserve to be a bestselling author!
I have to admit that my favorite part of the interview was when Ms. Alma included the part how I work. The part where I can't work until I have the images because it's true. It's how I really work. If you don't have the image, I won't be able to start. It's how my creativity works. Give me photos to work on and automatically, my creativity works on it's own and form an image in my head.
Until I have that, I don't have anything to work with. I am working with the author, my ego has no place in this.
Believe it or not, this is really true. I don't have anything else to say but nod on this because it's the truth. I treasure my clients a lot. Honestly, they're not just my clients, I also consider them as my friends too and I'm really blessed to have them with me. Like what I always say when people say that they don't know me or haven't seen my work or asking who my clients are, etc. I tell them, "I don't need to have TOO MUCH clients. I know there are a lot of cover artists out there and I've seen a lot who are really good that even I look up to them. All I need is my loyal clients and I'm more than happy."
I know you're thinking that I'm just saying it for show. Who wouldn't want to have a lot of clients, right? That's money too! Thing is, I'm happy with my clients because I already know what each of them likes. Also, we're both comfortable working together and that's something I'm really thankful for. They're already comfortable enough to tell me if they don't like anything because if they don't, I won't be able to give them the cover that they want. I'd rather work with people who'll feel comfortable and can be honest with me than work with people who are dishonest then later talk behind my back saying they hated the cover, etc. I don't want that and I'm really avoiding it to happen that's why I really take care of my clients and I'm pretty sure they know that too. All I ever want is to give the best cover that I can give to each of them. Their works are amazing and they so deserve to have an amazing book cover to represent their stories.
I'm really happy to be a cover artist. I really am.
To those who want to read the whole article/interview, you don't need to be in the Philippines to be able to read it too! Ms. Alma was nice enough to post it on her FB too! You can read it here. But if you're from the Philippines, don't forget to grab your own copy of July 21 issue of Philippines Graphic Magazine.
